Piper celebrates the life of one of Lexington’s own…

What a pleasant surprise I had when I checked Piper’s blog today.  It’s always a joy to read, but this hit very close to home.

Piper honored Elder D.J. Ward of Lexington’s Main Street Baptist Church.  I had the privilege of hearing Piper speak at Main Street at the conference (which he refers to in this post) in my freshman or sophomore year of high school.

Read what Piper has to say here and follow his links to the Herald-Leader article and guestbook

Isaiah 58 Ministry (4.29.08)

The first Isaiah 58 Ministry of the season was successful, though quite chilly (high 30s, low 40s)!  There were probably a little over 100 in attendance (guesstimating is not my specialty).

First, Pastor Steve welcomed everyone.  Then Wayne presented the Gospel to everyone who was there at 6:30 p.m.  Numbers were handed out to each family so that the “yard-free” would run more smoothly than last year.  Numbers were called and each batch of people had 10 minutes to plunder.

Hot dogs and sausages were served with a choice of Grippo’s, cheese puffs, baked beans, applesauce and fruit cocktail.  We also had pink lemonade, plain lemonade and water.

The “Are You a Good Person?” Survey was conducted numerous times.  I have to give the Spirit Award to Hannah…she was asking random adults some tough questions!  :o)

Pray the seeds planted tonight will take root and blossom.  Pray for the spiritual condition of these people.  Pray that they will come see us!

Kaphlooey!

So our TV has gone “kaphlooey!”  What a time for this to happen…after two weeks in a row of a message on complaining!  But…surprisingly enough, I haven’t complained about it (by the grace of God, of course)!  I am looking at this as a God-given opportunity for my spiritual life to flourish.  [Pray for Janna=*Update 11:06 a.m.: Janna is now in Piper’s Book, The Passion of Jesus Christ, asking me profound questions that are too big for my mind to handle…your prayers have been answered and succeeded!].

This morning, instead of watching CNN or the Today Show, I was blessed by John Piper’s T4G message that I’ve been wanting to listen to for two weeks now.  (Listen to it here).

It’s amazing how much time you will have when you don’t have a TV to watch!  So, let me encourage you to…

Announcing McKenna Eileen Radford!

Dear Ones,

God had richly blessed us again with the birth on Saturday, April 26, 2008, of McKenna Eileen Radford. McKenna was born at 6:42 AM, and weighed 8 pounds and 7 ounces, and is 21 inches long. Nathan and Carrie are so excited, as are we, at this new life.

We have a new program on our computer, so haven’t figured out yet how to put pictures on. So, this announcement will have to do. Thanks so much for your prayers for them and for us, as we were asking God for McKenna to be born before we left for Kenya. We really wanted to see her before we departed for Kenya this Thursday, May first. God is so good, and we thank Him for His many blessings, especially with healthy children and grandchildren. May our Lord bless you for your faithfulness to us, and to His work in Kenya.

We appreciate you,

Mike and Pam

NLBC Nightly News

Welcome to our first edition of the NLBC Nightly News (that isn’t so much “nightly” as it is “news”).
Tonight, we present an exclusive first-look at the interesting visitor we had Wednesday night, April 23, 2008.  Our visitor was a baby bat who was sleeping in the window next to our church.  All the kids loved it (for the most part)…see what they had to say in the video below:

Storing Up God’s Word in our Heart!

This is not only the cutest video you’ll probably ever see, it is also a good reminder that you’re never too young (or old!) to hide God’s Word in your heart.

If this little girl (who is barely three!) can quote all of Psalm 23, how much more can we be storing up in our hearts?!

This is exactly what we learned about in the kids’ class last night.  We discussed Deuteronomy 6

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

We learned that the Jews wore phylacteries and mezuzahs, but most importantly, they hid God’s Word in their hearts!  We even stored up another verse in our hearts last night: “I have stored up Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”  [Psalm 119:11]

We should be teaching our children the importance of God’s Word.  How will they ever believe us unless we live it out ourselves and store it in our hearts first?  It is my prayer that the kids at NLBC will always have someone they can look up to who is hiding God’s Word in their heart.  I pray that we will always teach those precious words to them diligently and talk about spiritual things at home, whether while we eat, ride in the car, take a walk, go to bed or even when we visit the homes of others.

Even though I do not have any children, I still take this verse very personally.  I believe it is my duty to help these children store up as much as they can in their little hearts and minds!

As Corrie Ten Boom said, “Gather the riches of God’s promises.  Nobody can take away from you those texts from the Bible which you have learned by heart.”

I hope you have started (and are continuing) with Psalm 119
Little Girl Saying Psalm 23

[I guess we can call this my once a month soapbox extravaganza!]
