Paul doesn’t give details about his affliction, but he describes its intensity. He didn’t have the strength to deal with it, but here’s the reason he went through it: that he would learn not to trust in himself, but in God. Paul had been trusting in himself, but finally realized he needed to trust in God, the One who delivered us from so great a debt. Human impotence casts itself at the feet of the Omnipotent.
