An Update from Odali and Kathy of the Alpha and Omega Children’s Home [Brazil]
These last few months at Alpha and Omega have been a whirlwind of changes and surprises. We have gone from 92 kids, to the 6 that still linger behind. It has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. As this 5 months of tug-of-war draws to an end, and the last children leave the home, we have set our eyes forward. We are ready to begin this new phase that God has set before us.
The judging process is expected to last several months, but by the grace of God, we are setting our goals to reopen Alpha and Omega Children’s Home early next year. When we do, we want the building and the staff, to be replenished, revived, and just like new. The groups that have come down in these last few months have been a great help in jumpstarting all the of the many work projects that need to be completed. However, there are still many things that need to be done before we can reopen. One in particular, is to update the home to meet fire safety standards (fire extinguishers, hoses, etc.) We still do not know the exact costs for this, but it is a pricy task.
Financially, our goal is to keep the bills paid, and yet still have available funds to continue the necessary improvements. However, that is not an easy task. All of the support that we received from social departments in Brazil has been cut off since the children were removed. It also seems as though many of our faithful American supporters have become confused by our situation here, and have put their donations on hold. In two weeks time, we received only $200.00 of support. Needless to say, that just doesn’t cut it.
We have decided to hold a huge yard sale and a dinner, here in Brazil, to raise money to sustain our ministry. I am writing to you, CHALLENGING you, to do the same. Here is your challenge: SPRING CLEAN! It’s that time of year, and everyone has things in their homes, that they no longer need or use. We are asking that you consider having a yard sale on behalf of Alpha and Omega Children’s Home. Include your family, friends, church, and neighbors. Advertise the yard sale, and the cause. If your subdivision does not allow yard sales, consider joining up with someone else, or doing it at your church. EBay is also an option to sell things. If a yard sale isn’t an option, some other ideas are: car washes, bake sales, love offering, etc. If you need other creative ideas, just send us an email, and we would be glad to help you brainstorm. We are sending this challenge to everyone we can. If you know someone who may be interested, and is not on our mailing list, please pass this on. Share the information with your friends, family, and churches. Even though the Devil has managed to put a pause on the Alpha and Omega Children’s Home, we know that God is in control. We have full faith that He has not finished His work through our ministry. Help us make Alpha and Omega better than ever before!
As an example of the impact made on the lives who come to Alpha and Omega, here is a letter that Katie received last week during her visit to Manaus, written by one of the girls who lived here for several years.
I want you to know that I am going to miss you a lot…
These days that you spent here were really meant a lot to us. I also want you to know that it doesn’t matter what happens, I am always going to love you, because you are the best mom I have ever had…
I am really sorry about the things that have happened to Alpha, they can take the kids away, but what they have learned there, no one can take from them. And above everything, God knows what to do, and you know that…
Even though we were often ungrateful, we cannot deny that the future of many was changed for the better after coming to Alpha and Omega. Even though, some of them don’t have the capacity to put into practice what they have learned, because they are cowards and are scared to live a different way of life. I ask God that I may not be one of those, but if it is God’s will, I will be ok…
Thank you for being this wonderful mother in my life…because through God, you gave me a reason to look at life in a loving way even though I had such a difficult childhood.
Forgive me for the many times that I still make a lot of mistakes. Not that it is necessary, but sometimes we have to learn the most difficult way before we really open our eyes…
Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart. I love you all very much.
Just to give you an idea of the ministry that is still taking place here at Alpha and Omega, here are a few pictures from the kite festival held a couple of weeks ago by the group from Georgetown College. It was a great success! We had over 200 kids and their parents here the entire day! It was wonderful!
