Scripture at Sunrise 11.27.2017

“What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion ya stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.'” -Romans 9:30-33

To the Jews, Jesus was a stumbling block, but to those of us who believe, He is our foundation. If you’re not careful, you’ll miss grace because of your morality and religiosity. Christ Jesus’ righteousness is the only righteousness that will get us into Heaven. –excerpts from Steve Wainright’s Sunday Morning Sermon

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” -Philippians 2:12-13

How Religion Works: If I obey, then God will love and accept me. The Gospel: I’m loved and accepted, therefore I wish to obey. -Tim Keller via Twitter

“For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” -2 Corinthians 5:21

“Religion makes us proud of what we have done. The Gospel makes us proud of what Jesus has done.” -Tim Keller via Twitter

Satan wants us lazy–substitute text messages for conversations, FB friendships for relationships, porn for intimacy, religion for Christ. -Hershael York via Twitter

Scripture at Sunrise 7.10.2013

“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” -Galatians 6:14

Religion makes us proud of what we have done. The Gospel makes us proud of what Jesus has done. -Tim Keller

Scripture at Sunrise 2.1.2012

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” -James 1:27

“How can any of us who have tasted the extravagant love of Christ be stingy with our resources? Doesn’t His compassion toward us make us naturally disposed to help those in need? If we see someone who has a need that we can meet, how can our heart not want to help them? Won’t we love the fatherless, and the widow, and the shut-in, and the homeless, since we know that we once were fatherless, estranged from the Father, disabled, and headed for eternal separation from God?”
