“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” -1 Peter 5:6

This is tantamount to a promise: if we will bow down, the Lord will lift us up. Humility leads to honor; submission is the way to exaltation. That same hand of God which presses us down is waiting to raise us up when we are prepared to bear the blessing. We stoop to conquer. Many cringe before men and yet miss the patronage they crave; but he that humbles himself under the hand of God shall not fail to be enriched, uplifted, sustained, and comforted by the ever-gracious One. It is a habit of Jehovah to cast down the proud and lift up the lowly.

Yet there is a time for the Lord’s working. We ought now to humble ourselves, even at this present moment; and we are bound to keep on doing so whether the Lord lays His afflicting hand upon us or not. When the Lord smites, it is our special duty to accept the chastisement with profound submission. But as for the Lord’s exaltation of us, that can only come “in due time,” and God is the best judge of that day and hour. Do we cry out impatiently for the blessing? Would we wish for untimely honor? What are we at? Surely we are not truly humbled, or we should wait with quiet submission. So let us do.

“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”  -1 Corinthians 11:3
Subordination and Authority
vs. 2– They kept to the teachings Paul had given and for that, he commended them.  The problem was their lack of understanding about male and female relationships. 
vs. 3– Paul’s premise.  Keep in mind that women didn’t have many rights in Biblical times, so the Gospel was very liberating. 
God is a God of order.  Insubordination brings chaos (just think of a boss who has insubordinate employees). 
>Christ is the head of every man (Matthew 28:18-20- Christ has all authority).
>The head of a woman is the man. 
>The head of Christ is God. 
Each one of these relationships is carried out in love.  (1 John 4:19, Ephesians 5, John 3:16)
Because we’re subordinate doesn’t mean we’re inferior. 
vs. 4-6– Implications: Don’t blur the lines between male and female, therefore blurring the lines of God’s order. 
vs. 7-10– Premise (vs. 3) defended.  God brought the woman from man. 
vs. 10– Angels are the supreme example of subordination. 
vs. 12– Equality and Dependence
Women in the Word are honored (Acts 1, Priscilla, Lois, Eunice, Women at the tomb, Mary, Martha…)
*Men and women have different roles, but are all equal in importance.
vs. 16– Offended by this?  Sign of rebellion.  In our society, there is much rebellion.  We are at enmity with God until we submit to Him.

“Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.”  -1 Corinthians 10:6
The title of this book is translated as “Numbers” in the Greek, but in Hebrew, it is translated as “In the Wilderness.” 
ch. 1:1-4– Census time: Moses is to count all the battle-worthy men at the base of Mt. Sinai. 
The Israelites have been at Mount Sinai for about a year.  By the end of Numbers, they end up in Moab by the Jordan River near Jericho. 

4 divisions to Numbers:
1) 19 days at Mt. Sinai (ch. 1-10:10)
2) 10 days to Kadesh (ch. 10:11-14:45)
3) 37 years (ch. 15:1-19:22)
4) 10 months in the 40th year…Moses is reciting events after they’ve happened from memory (ch. 20:1-36)

There is a lot of action in the book of Numbers.  All of this HAPPENED so that we might understand how we are to walk through the wilderness.  Sanctification happens in the wilderness.  We are in the wilderness right now.  We have not yet reached the Promised Land. 

Numbers is about Jesus Christ.
