Scripture at Sunrise 07.06.2022

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” -Romans 12:2

“The problem of sin is not primarily the world around us but the worldliness within us.” -John MacArthur

Scripture at Sunrise 10.10.2013

“If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” -John 15:19

Worldliness is whatever makes sin look normal and righteousness look strange. -Kevin DeYoung via Twitter

Scripture at Sunrise 8.14.2013

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” -Matthew 6:19-20

Covetousness is choosing earthly trinkets over eternal treasure. –Dave Harvey in Worldlinesspage 95

Scripture at Sunrise 9.21.09

Sunday School | 1 John 2:15-28 | Bro. Steve Dawson
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. -1 John 2:15
Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace.

Morning Worship | 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 | Pastor Steve Wainright
“For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”  -1 Corinthians 1:22-25
No man can change your sinful nature, but God can.  It seems too simple, and even foolish to some, as the snake on a pole did in the Old Testament, but…Look and Live!

Evening Worship | Intro to Leviticus | Bro. Jason Estes
“Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. -Hebrews 9:22
[Unfortunately, I was not able to hear Bro. Jason’s sermon.  I hope to listen to a recording of it eventually.  Until then, ponder this quote from Kevin DeYoung.]
Leviticus reminds us over and over: “My name is _____________________.  I am a sinner who needs a Savior.  I deserve to die.”

Scripture at Sunrise 6.17.09

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”  -Colossians 3:2

“When someone sets his affections upon the cross and the love of Christ, he crucifies the world as a dead and undesirable thing.  The baits of sin lose their attraction and disappear.  Fill your affections with the cross of Christ and you will find no room for sin.”  -John Owen

[as quoted in Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World, edited by C.J. Mahaney, pg. 108]

Scripture at Sunrise 6.10.09

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” -1 John 2:15

“In the end, the sum of all beauty is Christ, and the sin of all worldliness is to diminish our capacity to see Him and be satisfied in Him and show Him compellingly to a perishing world.”  -John Piper

[excerpt from John Piper‘s forward to Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World, edited by C.J. Mahaney, pg. 13; Crossway Books 2008]

Scripture at Sunrise 3.11.09

“Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.”   -1 John 2:15-16

John Owen, as quoted in CJ Mahaney’s “Worldliness”:

“When someone sets his affections upon the cross and the love of Christ, he crucifies the world as a dead and undesirable thing. The baits of sin lose their attraction and disappear. Fill your affections with the cross of Christ and you will find no room for sin.”

Scripture at Sunrise 3.10.09

“Do not love the world or anything in the world.”  -1 John 2:15

An excerpt from CJ Mahaney’s book titled Worldliness:

Charles Spurgeon, writing 150 years ago, nevertheless speaks poignantly to the problem in the church today: “I believe,” he asserted, “that one reason why the church of God at this present moment has so little influence over the world is because the world has so much influence over the church…Worldliness is growing over the church; she is mossed with it.”
